The Riviera Maya is 130 kilometers of coastline

  • Puerto Morelos and Riviera Cancun. The closest to the airport. Big, quiet hotels, good for families.
  • Playa del Carmen and Playacar. The midpoint: beach, Fifth Avenue and the ferry to Cozumel. It has its own page: Playa del Carmen All-Inclusive Vacation Packages
  • Puerto Aventuras and Akumal. Calm bays, close to the cenotes and the parks.
  • Tulum. To the south: the archaeological site by the sea and small hotels.

Brand-name hotels in these packages are named only as lodging; their photos and logos belong to them.

4 · When to go

The best time to visit Cancun

  • December to April: the best weather and the highest prices. Easter week and the year-end holidays fill up, so book early.
  • May and June: hot, fewer crowds and better prices.
  • July and August: summer vacation season; lots of families and high-season prices.
  • September to November: rainy and hurricane season; the lowest prices of the year.

Between April and August, sargassum seaweed can reach some Riviera Maya beaches; hotels clear it every day, and cenotes and parks are not affected.

From the airport to your hotel

From Cancun airport, Puerto Morelos is about 20 minutes away, Playa del Carmen about 50 and Tulum close to two hours. Tulum also has its own airport.

From MX$13,990 per couple. Five-star all-inclusive hotels cost more than hotel-and-tours packages.

Riviera Maya or Cancun?

Cancun has more nightlife and the short trip to Isla Mujeres. The Riviera Maya has bigger, quieter hotels, with cenotes, parks and Tulum nearby.

Which airport should I fly into?

Cancun, which has more flights, or Tulum if your hotel is farther south. The complimentary arrival transfer only applies at Cancun airport.
