How to choose your Tulum tour without surprises

In Cancun you'll see very cheap Tulum deals on the street and downtown. Some are good and some aren't. The difference is almost never the price: it's what they don't tell you.

5 questions before you pay

  1. What year is the vehicle, and does it have air conditioning? That's hours on the road.
  2. Does it include travel insurance?
  3. Is the guide certified? Ask whether they have a guide license.
  4. Does it include the entry fee for Tulum and Jaguar Park, or are they paid there? For a foreign visitor, that's MX$265 more.
  5. How many shopping stops are there? Some deals lower the price by adding sales stops.

What to see

What Tulum is and what you'll see

Tulum was a walled Maya port, built on a cliff about 12 meters high overlooking the Caribbean. It reached its heyday between the years 1200 and 1521, and it was still inhabited when the Spanish arrived. Its ancient name was Zama, "dawn," because it faces the sunrise. It is one of the few walled Maya cities and the only one of its size on the sea.

The must-sees

  1. 1

    El Castillo

    The main temple, which also served as a lighthouse for Maya canoes.

  2. 2

    Temple of the Descending God

    The upside-down figure that appears again and again in Tulum.

  3. 3

    Temple of the Frescoes

    It still has original mural paintings.

  4. 4

    The wall

    It surrounds the city on three sides; the fourth is the sea.

And Coba

  • a Maya city in the jungle, 45 min from Tulum, connected by more than 50 white roads (sacbes);
  • its pyramid, Nohoch Mul, is 42 m tall; since December 2025 you can climb it again, on a wooden staircase;
  • you get around by bike or in a tricycle taxi with a driver.
