How to get there from Cancun: three ways
-
1 On a tour
the most practical · 12 to 13 h
They pick you up at your hotel and you're back the same day, with everything taken care of.
-
2 On the Tren Maya
about 2 h to 2 h 15 min
From Cancun Airport station to Chichen Itza station. From the station to the site you need a transfer. Entry, lunch and the cenote are paid separately.
-
3 By ADO bus or by car
about 2 h 30 min
ADO bus, with few departures. By car, about 200 km on the toll highway.
The honest math: on your own, a foreign visitor pays the round-trip train, entry, lunch and a cenote, and the total easily tops the price of a tour. And you organize everything yourself. That's why almost everyone goes on a tour.

How to choose your Chichen Itza tour without surprises
In Cancun you'll see very cheap Chichen Itza deals on the street and downtown. Some are good and some aren't. The difference is almost never the price: it's what they don't tell you.
5 questions before you pay
- What year is the vehicle, and does it have air conditioning? That's 5 hours on the road in total.
- Does it include travel insurance?
- Is the guide certified? Ask whether they have a guide license.
- Is the entry fee included or paid there? For a foreign visitor, that's MX$697 more.
- How many shopping stops are there? Some deals lower the price by adding sales stops.

What Chichen Itza is and what you'll see
Chichen Itza was one of the most powerful Maya cities in Yucatan, at its peak between the years 800 and 1200. UNESCO declared it a World Heritage Site in 1988, and in 2007 it was chosen as one of the New Seven Wonders of the World. Its main pyramid, El Castillo or the Temple of Kukulcan, is a stone calendar: its four staircases of 91 steps plus the top platform add up to 365, one for each day of the year.
The must-sees
- 1
El Castillo (Temple of Kukulcan)
A pyramid about 30 m tall. At the March and September equinoxes, the shadow forms a serpent descending the staircase. Climbing it has not been allowed since 2006.
- 2
Great Ball Court
The largest in Mesoamerica. A clap in the center echoes back several times.
- 3
Sacred Cenote
A natural well for offerings, at the end of a Maya causeway (sacbe). Not for swimming.
- 4
Temple of the Warriors and Group of the Thousand Columns
The temple with columns carved with warriors and the esplanade of columns around it.
- 5
El Caracol
The astronomical observatory.
Site tips
- There's almost no shade: bring a hat, water and biodegradable sunscreen.
- The guided walk takes about 2 hours.
- There are vendors inside the site.
- For non-professional video you pay for the permit (MX$63).

Private Chichen Itza tour: with 6 or more, it costs about the same
Private Chichen Itza tour: a van for up to 6 people, MX$6,990 for the group, with round-trip ground transport, tolls, fuel and a tour conductor. Your tour conductor (a tour guide who also drives) is an expert who runs this tour every day: we book them specially to accompany only you and your group. They take you, wait for you and take you to the most important spots, at your pace. You pay for the van, not for each seat, so with 6 people the cost per person comes very close to a shared tour, and the day is yours: you choose the departure time, the cenote and where to eat. For more than 6, we quote a larger van. Booked on WhatsApp.
